Framingham is a city in eastern Massachusetts, located about 20 miles west of Boston in the MetroWest region. Its landscape combines developed neighborhoods and commercial districts with wooded areas, ponds, and former agricultural land. The Sudbury River and several smaller waterways pass through the surrounding area, while Cochituate State Park provides a large recreational lake nearby. Framingham developed as a regional transportation and manufacturing center, and its position along major roads and rail lines continues to connect it with Boston and communities across eastern Massachusetts.

Framingham’s history includes Indigenous connections to the area, followed by farming, milling, manufacturing, and immigration that shaped the community. The Framingham History Center preserves local collections and historic buildings, including the Edgell Memorial Library and the Village Hall. The city also has strong connections to the history of women’s education through the Framingham State University campus, which grew from one of the country’s early normal schools for teacher education. Later immigration brought communities from Brazil, South Asia, the Caribbean, and other regions, giving Framingham a diverse cultural identity reflected in its businesses, neighborhoods, and community events.

Callahan State Park offers wooded trails, open fields, and views across the surrounding countryside, while nearby Cochituate State Park centers on Lake Cochituate and provides opportunities for swimming, boating, fishing, and picnicking. Garden in the Woods, operated by Native Plant Trust in nearby Framingham, contains extensive collections of native New England plants arranged across woodland and wetland habitats. The city also has several conservation areas and walking trails that preserve portions of its former rural landscape. Framingham’s location makes it possible to combine these quieter natural areas with easy access to Boston and other MetroWest communities.
