Puerto Ayora is the largest town in the Galápagos Islands of Ecuador and is located on the southern coast of Santa Cruz Island. The town serves as a central base for travel throughout the archipelago, with ports, research centers, hotels, and tour operators concentrated around Academy Bay. Despite its role as the busiest urban area in the Galápagos, Puerto Ayora remains closely connected to the surrounding marine and volcanic environment. Streets lined with small shops and restaurants sit beside waterfront docks where fishing boats, water taxis, and sea lions are regularly seen throughout the day.

The culture of Puerto Ayora reflects a combination of local Ecuadorian traditions, scientific research activity, and international tourism. The Charles Darwin Research Station plays an important role in the town’s identity through conservation programs focused on giant tortoises and island ecosystems. Residents include people from mainland Ecuador as well as families with long ties to the islands’ fishing and maritime industries. Public markets, artisan stores, and waterfront cafés are common gathering places, while environmental protection remains an important part of local life because of the islands’ protected status and unique wildlife.

Many of Puerto Ayora’s attractions are connected directly to the surrounding coast and volcanic landscapes. Tortuga Bay, reached by a walking trail from town, is known for white sand beaches, marine iguanas, and calm mangrove-lined areas used for kayaking. Las Grietas, a narrow volcanic rock canyon filled with clear seawater, is a popular swimming and snorkeling site. The town’s fish market is also well known because pelicans and sea lions frequently gather nearby waiting for scraps from local fishermen. Offshore excursions from Puerto Ayora provide access to snorkeling sites, lava formations, and nearby islands rich in bird and marine life.

Seafood plays a major role in Puerto Ayora’s food culture, with restaurants serving dishes such as grilled lobster, ceviche, tuna, and canchalagua, a local shellfish. Fresh fruit juices and Ecuadorian coastal dishes are also common throughout the town. One distinctive detail about Puerto Ayora is the close interaction between people and wildlife within the urban area itself, where frigatebirds perch above docks and marine iguanas rest beside sidewalks near the harbor. The combination of scientific activity, tourism, and daily island life gives the town a character that differs from mainland Ecuadorian cities.
